Rock With Rolls-Royce At Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens

Rolls-Royce plc, the world-leading provider of power systems and services, is teaming up with Radio 2 to find the Rugby Anthem for the 2006 Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens Tournament next week.

Sixteen songs will go head-to-head in a competition on Radio 2 this week, leading up to the Sevens, in which Rolls-Royce is a leading and founding sponsor.

The eight songs with the most SMS votes from listeners will go through to the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens Rocking with Rolls-Royce competition on the main pitch to find the ultimate Dubai Rugby Sevens Anthem, explains John Phillips, General Manager, Rolls-Royce.

Every morning and afternoon, Radio presenters will give listeners two tunes from a list of popular rugby songs, to choose between.

Young Sophie to sing our National Anthem

Teenage singer Sophie Taylor-Moore will star before a rugby audience of thousands tomorrow when she performs the Welsh National Anthem at the Millennium Stadium.

Sophie, 16, from Barry, will follow in the vocal tracks of Katherine Jenkins and Charlotte Church when she performs Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau before Wales' rugby international with Canada in front of a near sell-out crowd.

Sophie, who writes her own songs in English and Welsh, is thrilled at the prospect.

'I'm very proud to have been given this opportunity and it will be an experience to savour,' she said.

'Having sung at the Millennium Stadium before, I know what a great place it is to sing. There is a great atmosphere there.

Barmy Army bowls underarm

THE chants and songs of England's Barmy Army might seem inoffensive enough. But looking beyond the puerile and crass attempts at humour, the Barmy Army is harmful to cricket.

They have successfully exploited the singing culture of soccer and, to a lesser extent, rugby in Britain.

This is where the danger lies. Initially, many soccer songs are whimsical and even funny, but they grate after a while. They are also used to bait opposing fans. First come the songs and then the crowd trouble.

It does not take too much imagination to see that Australians who want to go to the cricket and watch the game without the inanities of the Barmy Army will at some point express their point of view. The reason is palpably obvious.

The Barmy Army show precious little awareness of, or for that matter respect for, how Test cricket is played.
